Digital media is defined as “Digitized content (text, graphics, audio, and video) that can be transmitted over internet or computer networks“- businessdictionary.com

Digital communication is “the electronic transmission of information that has been encoded digitally (as for storage and processing by computers)”- thefreedictionary.com 

  1. How does the internet work?

According to internetsociety.org,The Internet works because open standards allow every network to connect to every other network. This is what makes it possible for anyone to create content, offer services, and sell products without requiring permission from a central authority. It levels the playing field for everyone and it’s the reason why we have a rich diversity of applications and services that many of us enjoy today.

Mother of a special needs child starts Twitter controversy with United airlines after not being allowed to travel with her child on her lap- yahoo.com/travel

What all of these articles demonstrate is using Twitter/ social media as a political outlet. It is of interest because it contradicts the original purpose. Over time, the intended use has led to an outlet for people to be heard. Ramifications include free speech controversies.

Twitter allows controversial opinions and ideas to be posted at any time by anyone. It begs the question how far is too far when it comes to free speech, especially on the internet. Any network is able to access these tweets that can cause an uproar and distrust between political/ authoritative figures and the public sphere.
